As the culmination of a global franchise driven by a primarily female fanbase, Breaking Dawn is to emotions and relationships what movies like Iron Man 2 are to explosions and CGI, indulging in big moments that are nothing but two characters staring into one another's eyes as if it were an epic gun battle. The only thing that might stop him is how much Jacob's death would hurt Bella.Breaking Dawn is one of few modern blockbusters that treats distinctly female interests and concerns- wedding dresses, honeymoons, childbirth- as cinematic spectacle. Sure, Edward has a grudging respect for Jacob, but getting the werewolf killed is certainly something he might be capable of - they're definitely not friends. The night before the battle, Edward and Jacob have a tense conversation when Bella is forced to huddle with Jacob for warmth. The vampire might want Jacob to get killed during the fight, taking out his opponent for Bella's affections once and for all.Įdward doesn't disguise his mistrust of Jacob in "Eclipse." He dismantles Bella's truck so she can't visit La Push, then blames Jacob's volatile werewolf temper. Unless, of course, Edward is purposefully trying to distract Jacob moments before the battle, to throw his rival off his game. Edward's justification simply doesn't make sense, considering the timing of the situation.
